Key Memory about Ankor Wat

Why are the temples built with such steep slopes? What as we drove on the roads, there were large walls our road cut into them?

You realised that walls are levvees of the Baray and that while we are now travelling on dry land, the Barrays were big reservoirs.

Why were some of the temples have such steep sides Especially those located inside the Barrays? It took us to visit a free museum that is rather rundown on the way from Siem Reap to Ankor Wat to realise that:  It was modelled after the Hindu mythical gods of a mountain ( Mt Meru) above the seas.

Why did all these Baray exists? It is all covered in National Geographic July 2009 Issue - " Ankor - why an ancient civilization collapse?"
